A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
DECLARING 2012 AS MEGAN RAPINOE YEAR
IN RECOGNITION OF HER OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE IN
WINNING A GOLD MEDAL IN THE LONDON OLYMPIC GAMES
WHEREAS, Megan Rapinoe was born and raised in Redding and began her soccer career at the
age of six with the Palo Cedro Youth Soccer League; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe attended Junction School and Foothill High School. During her high
school years she competed on the school track and basketball teams while playing club spccer with the
Elk Grove Pride of the Women's Premier Soccer League; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was .awarded a scholarship to, and. was a standout player for, the
University of Portland, where she was Freshman Player ofthe Year and her team was undefeated. She
also was a Soccer America First Team All-American and West Coast Conference Player ofthe Year. She
earned a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team in 2006 and after two serious knee injuries returned
to the team in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was selected 2nd overall in the 2009 Women's Professional Soccer
draft to the Chicago Red Stars, and now plays professionally for the Seattle Sounders; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was a valuable part of the U.S. team for the 2011 FIFA Women's
W orId Cup, where she was instrumental in helping her team reach the finals; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe scored three goals and tour assists for the U.S. Olympic team in the
2012 London Games, helping her team win five matches before beating the Japanese team to win a gold
medal in the XXX Olympiad; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe combined her natural talents with dogged determination, countless
hours of practice and workouts, and outstanding teamwork with her fellow teammates, taking her to the
highest level of play and bringing home the gold medal to the United States and Redding, California.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of
Redding declares 2012 as "Megan Rapinoe Year" in the City of Redding.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced, read, and adopted at a
regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 21 st day of August 2012, by the
following vote:
