e
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING COMMENDING
AND SUPPORTING THE SHASTA FAMILY JUSTICE CENTER
WHEREAS, in October 2003 President Bush announced "The President's Family Justice Center
Initiative" to create family justice centers across America inspired by the work of the nationally
recognized San Diego Family Justice Center; and
WHEREAS, in October 2004 Congress recognized the importance ofthe family justice center
movement by including family justice centers as a "purpose area" in Title I of the Violence Against
Women Act (V A W A 2005), using a model of collaboration to provide "wraparound" services from one
location; and
WHEREAS, in September 2010, the Shasta Family Justice Center was launched as a public
safety initiative under the leadership of the District Attorney's office with support from the entire
community, including the Mayor and Council, community agencies, non-profit and private industry; and
WHEREAS, in March 2011 the Shasta County Child Abuse Prevention Coordinating Council
assumed responsibility for the Shasta Family Justice Center; and
WHEREAS, in September 2011 the Shasta Family Justice Center celebrated its first anniversary
of co-locating services for victims of family violence, growing from 33 visits in its first month of
operation to 347 visits in August 2011; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding realizes that the Shasta Family Justice Center does not
duplicate existing services for victims of family violence, but rather co-locates trusted community
providers under one roof, thus reducing the time and travel needed for victims to seek; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding recognizes that family violence destroys lives, devastates
families, and shatters self-respect, and therefore recognizes that the Shasta Family Justice Center works
tirelessly to aid victims and break cycles of abuse. The City of Redding is committed to working with
