RESOLUTION NO. 2011 - 163
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
DECLARING SEPTEMBER 10, 2011 AS MEGAN RAPINOE DAY IN
RECOGNITION OF HER OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE ON THE 2011
U.S. WOMEN'S WORLD CUP SOCCER TEAM AND ON THE OCCASION
OF HER RETURN TO REDDING
WHEREAS, Megan Rapinoe was born and raised in Redding and began her soccer career
at age 6 with the Palo Cedro Youth Soccer League; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe attended Junction School and Foothill High School. During her
high school years, she competed on the school track and basketball teams while playing club soccer
with the Elk Grove Pride ofthe Women's Premier Soccer League; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was awarded a scholarship to the University of Portland and
played for the Pilots where she was recognized as the Freshman of the Year within the league and
several publications; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe earned a spot on the U.S. Women's National Team in 2006 and
after two serious knee injuries returned to the team in 2009; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was selected 2nd overall in the 2009 WPS Draft to Chicago Red
Stars of Women's Professional Soccer. She currently plays formagicJack franchise in Boca Raton, ,
Florida; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was selected as part ofthe U.S. team for the 2011 FIF A Women's
World Cup. She came on as a substitute in a group stage match vs Colombia in the 50th minute and
scored almost immediately to put the U.S. up 2-0. During the quarterfinal match against Brazil, Ms.
Rapinoe came on as a sub and lofted a cross into the box for Abby Wambach's game-tying, extra-
time header; she would later convert her shot during the penalty shootout to help send the United
States to the semifinals in a miraculous fashion; and
WHEREAS, Ms. Rapinoe was named ESPN's Next Level Player of the Week for completing
5 of 10 crosses. Ms. Rapinoe went on to make two more critical assists in the 2011 FIF A Women's
World Cup semi-finals and finals against France and Japan, respectively. She ended the tournament
with 1 goal and 3 assists.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Redding,
declares September 10, 2011, as "Megan Rapinoe Day" in the City of Redding.

I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced and read at a regular
meeting of the Redding City Council on the 6th day of September, 2011, and was duly adopted at
