RESOLUTION NO. 2010 - 36 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING RECOGNIZING APRIL 11 TO APRIL 17,2010, AS NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK WHEREAS, National Library Week is being celebrated in public libraries throughout the country from April II to April 17, 2010; and WHEREAS, public libraries are centers for education, information, knowledge and entertainment; and WHEREAS, public libraries and librarians advance teaching and learning by helping the general public, students, faculty, and researchers obtain the best, most accurate, and complete information; and WHEREAS, public libraries are changing and dynamic places, offering books, computers, internet access, e-mail reference and other innovative services to connect their users with ideas and information; and WHEREAS, public libraries provide technology training for library users of all ages and help to bridge the "digital divide" for those who do not have access to technology at home or at school; and WHEREAS, more than 580,000 people use the Redding Library each year; and WHEREAS, the Redding Library changes lives by serving more than 140 adults annually through unique, confidential and customized literacy services delivered primarily through trained volunteers. These volunteers contribute over 5,900 hours annually to assist adults in learning how to read, thus helping adults to achieve goals such as driver's license, writing a resume, obtaining employment or reading a book to a child for the first time; and WHEREAS, the Redding Library provides equal and economical services to library users, and in many cases, serves as the community's only point of access to resources for learning. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby: Recognizes the week of April II to April 17, 2010, as Library Week, and commends the Redding Library, librarians and all library workers and volunteers for enriching the lives of residents and helping to make our community an exceptional place to live, learn and work.
