A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF REDDING DECLARING OCTOBER 2008,
AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH,"AND
OCTOBER 16, 2008, AS "THINK PINK DA Y,"
IN THE CITY OF REDDING
WHEREAS, every community in California is affected by breast cancer as the most commonly-diagnosed
cancer in women, striking one in eight; and
WHEREAS, patient awareness and early detection through breast cancer screening, improved the chances
for cure and survival and decreased the mortality rate by 27%, despite the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed
annually in California has not decreased since 1988; and
WHEREAS, it is estimated that in 2008, 130 new cases of breast cancer will be diagnosed in Shasta County
and 21,160 diagnosed cases statewide will carry a 20% fatality rate; and
WHEREAS, three types of breast examinations are proven to be effective in early detection: routine
mammography (the single most effective method), yearly clinical breast exams and monthly breast self-examination;
and
WHEREAS, 2008 marks the twelfth anniversary of the Nor-Cal Think Pink Project to raise awareness about
breast cancer and observe "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and "Think Pink Day," which provides the
opportunity for women to become aware that they are at risk and to participate in breast cancer screening; and
WHEREAS, the "Think Pink" campaign continues to grow with 36 Northern California communities in the
counties of Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Tehama, and Shasta participating by handing out approximately 40,000 breast
cancer information bags to members of the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby proclaims
the month of October 2008 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and October 16, 2008, as "Think Pink Day,"
in Redding, and urges all women to obtain routine mammography, clinical breast exams, and perform monthly self
examination.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding encourages all citizens to
support this life-saving endeavor by wearing pink on "Think Pink Day" to increase public awareness of this
important event.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the
City Council of the City of Redding on the 7th day of October, 2008, and was duly adopted at said meeting by the
following vote:
