RESOLUTION NO. 2008 - 154 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 2008 YOUTH PEER COURT MONTH IN THE CITY OF REDDING WHEREAS, throughout the month of September, more than 1,300 youth court programs operating in our nation's juvenile justice systems, schools, and community-based organizations will celebrate the 7th Annual National Youth Court Month, and the sixth year that the Shasta County Youth/Peer Court has been in operation; and WHEREAS, for more than thirty years, youth courts continue to be one of the fastest-growing crime prevention and early intervention programs in the nation, offering innovative solutions to prevent juvenile crime while educating young people; and WHEREAS, youth courts emphasize the importance of community involvement and provide youth with an opportunity to learn about government and take an active role in upholding democratic principles; and WHEREAS, youth courts empower youth to develop solutions by teaching leadership, decision- making and problem-solving techniques, including the appropriate use of peer pressure, and provide opportunities to mentor to gain a clearer understanding of our nation's judicial system; and WHEREAS, youth court volunteers playa crucial role toward achieving the goal of reducing juvenile crime in this country and teach youth about accountability and the consequences of making poor choices; and WHEREAS, the Redding City Council strongly supports youth court programs because they help build healthier and safer communities in which we live, raise families and work. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Redding City Council proclaims September 2008 as Youth/Peer Court Month in Redding, and commends the volunteers who work to promote the Shasta County Youth/Peer Court and the juvenile justice system.
