A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2003, AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH," OCTOBER 16, 2003, AS "THINK PINK DAY," AND OCTOBER 17, 2003 AS "NATION.~,L MAMMOGRAPHY DAY" WHEREAS, breast cancer affects every community in California as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, striking one in eight; and WHEREAS, since 1995, the national death rate has declined,by more than 3.4% annually, primarily due to patient awareness and early detection .through breast cancer screening which improves chances for survival - reducing fatalities 16% in women 40 years and older and 33% in women 50 years and older; and WHEREAS, three types of breast examinations are proven to be effective in early detection: Routine mammography (the single most effective method), yearly clinical breast exams and monthly breast self-examination; and WHEREAS, breast cancer is not a disease exclusive to women with almost 1,500 new cases of male breast cancer diagnosed in 2003, of which 200 will succumb to the disease; and WHEREAS, through the efforts of Nor Cal Think Pink members, the "Think Pink" campaign is spreading across the nation to florists eager to join the fight against breast cancer by donating millions of the campaign's "signature" flower, the camation, from locations in New York, Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Michigan, Texas, Wisconsin, Louisiana, Maine, New Jersey, and North Dakota; and WHEREAS, the observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness' Month," "Think Pink Day," and "National Mammography Day," provide an'opportunity for women to becomeaware that they are at risk and participate in breast cancer screening. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding proclaims the month of October 2003 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," October 16, 2003, as "Think Pink Day," and October 17, 2003, as "National Mammography Day," in Redding, and urges all women to be aware of and reduce their risk of breast cancer, and encourages all citizens to support this life-saving endeavor by wearing pink on that day to increase public awareness of this important event.
