A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING
MARCH 14, 2003, AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY, OTHERWISE KNOWN
AS ARBOR DAY;
AND MARCH '~0 THROUGH 14, 2003, AS ARBOR WEEK.
WHEREAS, in 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of
Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than one million
trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water,
cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen,
and provide habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood to build our
homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products and by-products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality
of business areas, and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, trees wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual
renewal; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding has been recognized as a Tree City U. S. A. by the
National Arbor Day Foundation for the twenty-second consecutive year, and desires to
continue its tree-planting activities; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding has also been recognized as a Tree Line Utility
U. S. A. by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the ninth consecutive year, and desires
to continue its educational program about the energy conservation benefits derived from
trees;
of Redding hereby proclaims March 14, 2003, as Cbmmunity Tree Planting Day, otherwise
known as Arbor Day; and the traditional days of March 10 through 14, 2003, as Arbor
Week.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens residing
within the city limits of the City of Redding to support efforts to protect our trees and
woodlands; support our City's Urban Forestry Program; and plant trees to gladden the
hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced and read at a
regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 4th day of February 2003,
and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following vote:
