MAURICE JOltANNESSEN FOR SIGNIFICANT CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE CITY OF REDDING AND THE NORTH STATE WHEREAS, K. Maurice Johannessen began his political career in 1986 as a member of the Redding City Council and served as Mayor from 1988 to 1989, before being elected to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors where he served from 1990 to 1994; and WHEREAS, K. Maurice Johannessen was elected to the position of California State Senator for the Fourth District in November 1993, taking office January 1, 1994, and serving in that position for eight years until December 31, 2002; and WHEREAS, during that time, Senator Johannessen provided steadfast, Sensible and responsible representation of District Four; and WHEREAS, Senator Johannessen's leadership is characterized by vision and a commitment to the welfare of the north state and the City of Redding as evidenced by the following significant achievements: · · · · · · Secured $10 million in grant funds for the Redding Sports Complex Secured $17 million in grant funds for the Turtle Bay Exploration Park Secured $ 3 million in grant funds for Trails Secured $500,000 for renovation of the historic Cascade Theatre Secured $7 million for the first State Veterans' Cemetery located in Shasta County Authored Senate Bill 1457 providing $500,000 in law enforcement funding annually for rural county sheriff's departments Secured over $1 million for resigning highways in the City of Redding Secured $1.1 million in funding for Owner-Occupied and Rental Rehabilitation Programs Secured $5 million in funding for the Clover Creek Preserve Project Secured the designation of Shasta County as the future site for construction of one of three Veterans' Homes in California Authored Senate Bill # 103, "Cody's Law," allowing felony charges to be brought against dog owners who train their dogs to attack and kill; and WHEREAS, in addition, Senator Johannessen supported significant legislation to provide tax relief, improve education, enhance public safety, improve local economy, protect natural resources, provide flood relief, and provide assistance to veterans while actively opposing proposals and programs that would adversely affect Senate District Four such as the continued influx of group homes in Shasta County and protecting Northern California's water from the state water transfer proposal; and WHEREAS, in recognition of his exemplary public service demonstrated by noteworthy and lasting contributions, Senator Johannessen received the Patti Mattingly Distinguished Legislator of the Year award in 2002; and WHEREAS, Senator Johannessen has, at great political expense, helped the City of Redding more than anyone thought possible and as a consequence, our community is a much better place to live. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding pays tribute to a man respected and admired for his leadership, tireless dedication and support of the City of Redding and the north state.
