HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2007-195 - Dr. Randy Smith . RESOLUTION NO. 2007 - 195. A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING COMMENDING DR. RANDY SMITH FOR EXEMPLARY EFFORTS TO ENHANCE THE WATERSHEDS IN AND AROUND THE CITY OF REDDING WHEREAS, in 1998, Dr. Smith retired from medicine and turned his attention, enthusiasm and efforts toward community and environmental issues joining the Rotary Club of Redding and its Environmental Committee; and WHEREAS, in 2004, Dr. Smith initiated a campaign to eradicate Arundo, a fast-growing, non- native plant, similar to bamboo, which was introduced in the 1960s as erosion control but now chokes local streams and other waterways around the north state; and WHEREAS, the Arundo eradication campaign over the last few years has involved hundreds of volunteers and thousands of hours to remove significant stands of the invasive weeds along the Stillwater Creek, Calaboose Creek and Churn Creek among others; and WHEREAS, Dr. Smith has contributed to the health of the natural environment through his dedicated service on the City of Redding Planning Commission since May 2003, the Department ofFish and Game's CalTIP Citizen's Review Board where he reviews cases of suspected poachers and polluters, Mercy Foundation Board, and as a Horticulture Volunteer at Turtle Bay focusing on gardening and care of the McConnell Arboretum & Gardens; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding commends Randy Smith, a man respected and admired for his exemplary service, and for his commitment and dedication to the betterment of our community's streams and waterways.
