HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2007-189 - National Youth Court Month - RESOLUTION NO. 2007 - 189- A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 2007 AS "NATIONAL YOUTH COURT MONTH" IN THE CITY OF REDDING WHEREAS, throughout the month of September, more than 1,231 youth court programs operating throughout the nation will join to recognize the 6th Annual "National Youth Court Month" and celebrate "Empowering Youth, Experience Justice;" and WHEREAS, youth courts are one of the fastest growing crime prevention and intervention programs in the nation offering innovative solutions to prevent juvenile crime and educate young people by emphasizing the importance of community involvement and providing youth with an opportunity to learn about government by taking an active role in upholding democratic principles; and WHEREAS, youth courts empower youth by developing skills in leadership, the decision-making process and problem solving so that they learn the appropriate use of peer pressure and are provided with opportunities to mentor and instill integrity in their peers through a clearer understanding of the judicial system; and WHEREAS, youth court volunteers playa crucial role in making this goal a reality by teaching our youth about accountability and the consequences of making poor choices while rewarding responsible behavior; and WHEREAS, City of Redding strongly supports youth court programs because they help build healthier and safer communities in which we live, raise families and work WHEREAS, the Shasta County Youth Peer Court and the Youth Violence Prevention Council are sponsoring an open house/trial on September 25,2007, at Sequoia Middle School at 5:00 p.m. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby proclaims the month of September 2007 as "National Youth Court Month," and urges all citizens to find ways to give their time, energy and talents to serve the Shasta County Youth Peer Court.
