A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF REDDING DECLARING OCTOBER 2006,
AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH," AND
OCTOBER 19, 2006, AS "THINK PINK DA Y,"
IN THE CITY OF REDDING
WHEREAS, breast cancer affects every community in California as the most commonly-diagnosed cancer
in women, striking one in eight; and
WHEREAS, even though the number of breast cancer cases diagnosed annually in California has not
decreased since 1988, early detection and patient participation in a 5-year plan of breast cancer screening, have
increased chances for cure and survival by over 95%; and
WHEREAS, the statewide estimate for newly-diagnosed breast cancer cases in 2006 is 22,070,140 of which
will occur in Shasta County and carry an 18% fatality rate; and
WHEREAS, three types of breast examinations are proven to be effective in early detection: routine
mammography (the single most effective method), yearly clinical breast exams and montWy breast self-examination;
and.
WHEREAS, 2006 marks the tenth anniversary ofthe Nor-Cal Think Pink Project to raise awareness about
breast cancer and observe "Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and "Think Pink Day," which provides the
opportunity for women to become aware that they are at risk and to participate in breast cancer screening; and
WHEREAS, in its inaugural year in 1997, "Think Pink" handed out 500 breast cancer information bags in
Redding. Since that time, the campaign has significantly grown with 36 Northern California communities
participating in Trinity, Siskiyou, Modoc, Tehama, and Shasta counties; and this year, 40,000 breast cancer
information bags will be handed out in these communities.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council ofthe City of Redding hereby proclaims
the month of October, 2006, as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," and October 19, 2006, as "Think Pink Day,"
in Redding, and urges all women to obtain routine mammography, clinical breast exams, and perform monthly self
examination.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding encourages all citizens to
support this life-saving endeavor by wearing pink on "Think Pink Day" to increase public awareness of this
important event.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the
City Council of the City of Redding on the 3rd day of October, 2006, and was duly adopted at said meeting by the
following vote:
