HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2006-013 - Arbor Day c'" e e RESOLUTION NO. 2006-13 -t A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING MARCH 10,2006, AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY, OTliERWISE KNOWN AS ARBOR DAY; AND MARCH 6 THROUGH MARCH 10, 2006, AS ARBOR WEEK. WHEREAS, in 18~r2 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood to build our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products and by-products; and WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS, trees wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and WHEREAS, the City of Redding has been recognized as a Tree City U. S. A. by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the twenty-fifth consecutive year, and desires to continue its tree-planting activities; and WHEREAS, the City of R1sdding has also been recognized as a Tree Line Utility U. S. A. by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the twelfth consecutive year, and desires to continue its educational program about the energy conservation benefits derived from trees; , NpW, THEREFORIE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council oUhe City of Redding hereby proclaims March 10, 2006, as Community Tree Planting Day, otherwise known as Arbor Day; and the traditional days of March 6 through March 10, 2006, as' Arbor Week. ~ ()' \ - \JJ' e e BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens ,I residing within the city limits of the City of Redding to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands; support our City's Urban Forestry Program; and plant trees to !~Iadden the hearts and promote the weill-being of present and future generations.
