SUBJECT: 4.9(a)--Resolution regarding Peace Of�cers'Memorial Days
Recommendation
Adopt Resolution proclaiming May 4, 2026, as California Peace Officer Memo�ial Day, May
14, 2026, as Shasta County Peace OfficeN Memorial Day, and May 15, 2026, as National Peace
Officer Memorial Day in the City of Redding.
Fiscal Impact
There is no impact to the General Fund.
Alternative Action
The City Council (Council) could choose to not recognize the National, California, and Shasta
County Peace Officer Memorial Days.
Background/Analysis
The Police Department requests the Council adopt the attached Resolution proclaiming May 4,
2026, as California Peace Officer Memorial Day; and May 14, 2026 as Shasta County Peace
Of�cer Memorial Day; and May 15, 2026, as National Peace Officer Memorial Day.
In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officer Memorial Day and
the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. The proclamation was
established by a joint resolution of Congress in 1962.
Each year, the Shasta County Peace Officer's Memorial Committee conducts a memorial
ceremony. The ceremony is held in honor of the officers killed in the line of duty over the history
of Shasta County. The ceremony will be held at the front steps of the former Shasta County
Courthouse, 1500 Court Street, Redding, at noon on iVlay 14, 2026.

As of April l, 2026, according to the Officer pown Memorial Page, there were 115 line of duty
deaths in the United States in 2025, 13 of which were in California.
Environmental Review
This is not a project defined under the California Environmental Quality Act, and no further
action is required.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
PROCLAIMING MAY 4, 2026, AS CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICER
MEMORIAL DAY, MAY 14, 2026, AS SHASTA COUNTY PEACE
OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY AND MAY 15, 2026, AS NATIONAL
PEACE OFFICER MEMORIAL DAY IN THE CITY OF REDDING
WHEREAS, May 4, 2026, has been designated as California Peace Officer Memorial Day; and
May 14, 2026, has been designated by the Shasta County Board of Supervisors as Shasta County
Peace Officer Memorial Day; and May 15, 2026 has been designated National Peace Officer
Memorial Day; and
WHEREAS, In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as National Peace Officers
Memorial Day and the calendar week in which May 15th falls as National Police Week. The
proclamation was established by a joint resol�ution of Congress in 1962; and
WHEREAS, in 2025, 115 officers were killed nationwide, with 13 California officers being
killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, the safety of our citizenry greatly depends on the services of the Redding Police
Department, the Shasta County Sheriff's Department, and the Anderson Police Department, as
well as the many county, state and federal agencies that make up the law enforcement
community in Shasta County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding
hereby proclaims May 4, 2026, as California Peace Officer Memorial Day; and May 14, 2026, as
Shasta County Peace Officers Memorial Day; and May 15, 2026 as National Peace Officer
Memorial Day; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council urges residents and civic organizations to
salute this City's dedicated law enforcement professionals by attending the Shasta County Peace
Officers Memorial, and directs that a11 City of Redding flags be flown at half-staff on May 4,
May 14, and May 15, 2026, in honor of the peace officers killed in the line of duty during 2025.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced and adopted at a regular
meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 21 st day of April, 2026, by the
