Parkview City Hall � City Manager Cowden submitted a memo to all councilrnen dated December 27th on "Proposal of Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company to install Centralized Dial Telephone Systern at Parkview City Hall". He outlined the proposal which would entail a full time P. B.X, operator at a cost between $3, 600. 00 to $4, 200. 00 � s - annually. He concludes his memo as follows: "Since :the cost of.moving all �,�C,O telephones now in the City Hall to Parkview will only cost $194. 00 and it, is felt that our present telephone system is satisfactory, it is my opinion that we should retain our present system. "� - • Council were advised the City Engineer has an inter-communication system , which can be expanded to the entire building with very little difficulty. RAIN SHELTER ,�SW Corner South & Athens • Mr. R. M. Kennicott, Kennicott Gonstruction Company, Inc. , requested permi-ssion to construct a rain shelter on the southwest corner of South Street and Athens Avenue . � on City property, all costs to be borne by him. � � He states there is an 80 ft. right-of-way on 5outh 5treet, west of Athens Avenue, and only 60 ft. of this is being used for street purposes. He stated� his rea:sons �G�- for this request; students and people using the city bus service collect on the front porches of his rentals during�the rainy season to the annoyance of the tenants. M., Kennicott to construct a rain shelter on the south- west corner of South Street and Athens Avenue. The Vote: Unanimous Ayes: _ _ The City Engineer was directed to wo.rk with Mr. Kennicott re location of this� rain shelter. _ ,, . _ � : < < : GONFERElVCE ON AGING - Washington, :D, C. . - City Manager Cowden advised that Merritt Nelson, Director of Parks and F�.e- creation had received official notification from Governor Brown that he had been ' asked to serve as delegate to the White House Conference on Aging,_ January 9th through 12th inclusive, Washington, D�. C. He would be one of only two recreation officials at the City level from the entire 'State of California attending the conference. It was Mr. Cowden's recommendation_that council approye an expenditure of $401 , l0.to defray the cost of the trip and requested a resolution be prepared to ��`�� transfer funds from Unappropriated Budget Surplus to A.ccount 62,5-67 Travel and Conference, Recreation Department. Mr. Cowden further stated Merritt would represent the counties of Shasta, Trinity and Siskiyou and if so directed dZ �� by council, he would ask the Board of Supervisors of the countiies involved to participate in the cost of the trip. ' _. Councilman,Simons,moved_the recommendation of the City Manager be approved and Merritt Nelson attend.the Gonference on Aging, Washington; D. Mayor Fleharty explained this was no reflection on Merritt Nelson, only .the weigh- ing of expenses involved against the value City will receive . BU5 STOP5 ON NEW U.S. 99 FREEWAY � City.Engineer,Ward,,advised Fred S. Saunders, Assis�tant -District Engineer, ' Division ,o,f Highways, had indicated a provision of the State Highway Code permits cities and counties to construct bus stop areas at interchanges on the freeway pro- :-3G�- viding they can prove the need for such stop. That such facilities must be con- structed by the public only as it,proportionately benefits the .public, and if such facilities are deemed necessary the local agencies must prove.their need which requires considerable work and is difficult to do. , _ ,';., He further states in a memo dated December�2lst, very few of these stops have been built and only in large cities where there is a high incident of pedestrian traffic. 187 It was Mr. Ward's recommendation that City inform the State.they can see no need for any bus stops in the�Redding area. The question before council was whether the taxi cab'�service was adequate or inadequate in accordance with the Code of the City of Redding�.
