SUBJECT: 4.9(a) --Resolution regarding California Peace Officers' Memorial Days
Recommendation
Adopt Resolution proclaiming May 15, 2025, as California Peace Officers' Memorial Day;
May 15, 2025, as Shasta County Peace Officers' Memorial Day; and May 11-17, 2025, as
National Police Week in the City of Redding.
Fiscal Impact
There is no impact to the General Fund.
Alternative Action
The City Council (Council) could choose to not recognize California Peace Officers' Memorial
Day, Shasta County Peace Officers' Memorial Day, and/or National Police Week.
Background/Analysis
The Police Department requests the Council adopt the attached Resolution proclaiming May 15,
2025, as California Peace Officers' Memorial Day; May 15, 2025, as Shasta County Peace
Officers' Memorial Day; and May 11 through 17, 2025, as National Police Week.
As of April 16, 2025, there were 21 law enforcement line of duty deaths in the United States.
According to the Officer Down Memorial Page, there were 165 line of duty deaths in the United
States in 2024, 4 of which were in California. This year 21 officers have already lost their lives
in the line of duty.
To honor law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty, Congress has proclaimed the week of
May 11 through 17, 2025, as National Police Week.
Each year, the Shasta County Peace Officer's Memorial Committee conducts a memorial

ceremony. The ceremony is held in honor of the officers killed in the line of duty over the history
of Shasta County; to date, there have been 1.6 deaths with no local fatalities in 2025. The
ceremony will be held at the front steps of the former Shasta County Courthouse, 1500 Court
Street, Redding, at noon on May 1.5, 2025.
Environmental Review
This is not a project defined under the California Environmental Quality Act, and no further
action is required.

A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
PROCLAIMING MAY 15, 2025, AS "CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICERS'
MEMORIAL DAY;" MAY 15, 2025, AS "SHASTA COUNTY PEACE
OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY;" AND MAY 11 THROUGH MAY 17, 2025,
AS "NATIONAL POLICE WEEK" IN THE CITY OF REDDING
WHEREAS, May 15, 2025, has been designated by the California State Legislature as
California Peace Officers' Memorial Day; and
WHEREAS, the week of May 11 through May 1.7, 2025, has been designated "National.
Police Week" by both an Act of Congress and Presidential Proclamation; and
WHEREAS, in 2024, 165 officers were killed nationwide, with 4 California officers being
killed in the line of duty; and
WHEREAS, the safety of our citizenry greatly depends on the services of the Redding
Police Department, the Shasta County Sheriff's Department, and the Anderson Police Department,
as well as the many county, state and federal agencies that make up the law enforcement
community in Shasta County;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding
hereby proclaims May 15, 2025, as "California Peace Officers' Memorial Day;" May 15, 2025, as
"Shasta County Peace Officers' Memorial Day;" and May 11 through 17, 2025, as "National
Police Memorial Week" in the City of Redding.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council urges residents and civic
organizations to salute this City's dedicated law enforcement professionals by attending the Shasta
County Peace Officers' Memorial, and directs that all City of Redding flags be flown at half-staff
on May 15, 2025, in honor of the peace officers killed in the line of duty during 2024.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced and adopted at a
regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 6th day of May, 2025, by the
