Fiscal Impact This agreement will provide additional funding for the curren School Resource Officers (SRO) above the current level of funding from the Shasta Union High School District(SUHSD). In the current fiscal year, the SUISD agreement with the Redding Police Department (RPD) provided funding in the amount of $150,224. This funding increase to a total amount of $312,4'74 wi11 offset the cost of SRO's and save the General Fund. No additional positions will be funded. Alternative Action City Council could choose not to authorize the Chief of Police to enter into the agreement and provide staff with alternative direction. This would reduce the funding RPD receives for SRO's. Background/Analysis RPD has five SRO's that are assigned to different schools throughout the City. These positions are currently assigned to the Redding Elementary School District, Enterprise Elementary School District, Shasta Community College, and Shasta Union High School District. RPD started providing two uniformed officers to SUHSD for the 1996-9'7 school year. Due to loss of grant funding, one officer was eliminated in the 2002-03 school year and was reinstated by RPD in the 2004-OS school year at no cost to the SUHSD. Report to Redding City Council June 13,2024 Re: 4.9(a)--Authorize Agreement with SUHSD Page 2 SUI-ISD approached RPD this spring to fund an additional SRO for the Foothill IHigh School campus, bringing the total SRO's for SUHSD to three. RPD will increase the current level of SRO's to s. The extra SRO position wi11 be absorbed by a patrol officer position and no additional positions are being requested. Environmental Review Accepting the grant is not a project as defined by the California Environmental Quality Act, therefore, no further action is required at this time.
