There is no fiscal impact by adopting the resolution.
Alternative Action
The City Council could decline to adopt a resolution declaring April as Fair Housing Month.
Background/Analysis
The City of Redding (City) has historically recognized April as Fair Housing Month. The
purpose of Fair Housing month is to further educate tenants and landlords about their rights and
responsibilities with respect to discrimination based on race, color, ancestry, national origin,
religion, actual or perceived sexual orientation, physical disabilities, gender identity, age, and
marital/familial status. Informational brochures and letters with current regulations are
distributed annually to landlords and real estate agents. This information is also available
throughout the year to tenants through the Housing Division.
The City and Legal Services of Northern California, along with other Shasta Fair Housing
Alliance partners, sponsor an annual Fair Housing Workshop to educate the community about
fair housing laws. This year's workshop is scheduled for April 25, 2024, and will be held in the
Redding City Council chambers/Community Room. Presently, the meeting agenda and hours of
the workshop are being confirmed. Once available, the workshop details will be communicated
to the community.
