Q: " jgibilisco@cityofredding.org btippin@cityofredding.org SUBJECT: 4.1(a) --Letter of Support for Simpson University Nursing Program Equipment Recommendation Authorize the Mayor to send a Letter of Support to United States Senators Alex Padilla and Laphonza Butler for funding support to expand Simpson University's nursing programs. Fiscal Impact There is no fiscal impact to sending the attached letters of support. Alternative Action The City Council could choose to not send the letters of support. Background/Analysis Simpson University (Simpson) is seeking support for congressional funding to expand its nursing programs that are offered at the University. The additional funding will allow Simpson to make needed upgrades to modernize its simulation lab and acquire much needed equipment such as mannequins, software, and other needed equipment. Simpson is hoping to expand its nursing programs and offer additional degree programs such as Family Nurse Practitioner, Doctorate of Nursing Practice, and Physician's Assistant. Simpson University is aware that there is a shortage of nurses in Northern California and hopes with expanding its nursing programs that it can increase the number of qualified nurses to the North State. This would allow more students to attend Simpson University with providing more class options and contribute to the local economy of Redding and neighboring areas. Simpson University's nursing program has long been recognized for its commitment to producing skilled Registered Nurses who are equipped to lead in their respective fields. By investing in the modernization of the Simulation Lab, Simpson will further empower its students to excel in their studies. The integration of virtual simulation products into Simpson's Simulation Lab holds immense promise not only for the advancement of nursing education at Simpson but also for the enhancement of healthcare delivery in Redding and its surrounding communities. The shortage of qualified nurses in Northern California, particularly in Shasta County and rural areas, has been a persistent challenge over the past two decades. As we approach 2030, it is projected that California will rank among the top five states facing nursing shortages nationwide. This initiative will facilitate the expedited production of qualified nurses, addressing the immediate needs of the local healthcare sector. This funding will enable Simpson to acquire state-of-the-art equipment, including new mannequins, software, and other essential resources, thereby enhancing the quality of education and training offered to nursing students. In addition, this project will also have a positive economic impact on our community. It will provide more class options with the latest technology and equipment, and contribute to the overall growth of our local economy by increasing the number of students Simpson serves in Redding and neighboring areas. Thank you in advance for your consideration of this request.
