HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 2004-064 - West Nile Awareness (0 e RESOLUTION NO. 2004-64 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING MAY 3 THROUGH MAY 9, 2004 "MOSQUITO & VECTOR CONTROL AND WEST NILE VIRUS AWARENESS WEEK" WHEREAS, the City of Redding recognizes that West Nile Virus, a virulent and potentially deadly form of encephalitis, poses a grave threat to the health and safety of people, horses, avian species and other wildlife; and WHEREAS, in 2003, Southern California reported the1irst three human West Nile Virus cases, while nation-wide, 264 individuals lost their lives and 10,000 individuals became seriously ill from the disease; and 0 WHEREAS, adequately-funded mosquito monitoring and control, and public awareness programs are the best way to prevent outbreaks of West Nile Virus and other diseases borne by mosquitos and other vectors; and WHEREAS, the Shasta Mosquito and Vector Control District works with the United States Environmental Protection Agency, the State Department of Health Services and other mosquito and vector control districts throughout California to reduce pesticide risks to humans, animals and the environment while protecting them from mosquito and vector-borne diseases; and WHEREAS, educational programs are being developed to include schools, civic groups, private industry, and government agencies in order to meet the public's need for information about West Nile Virus, other diseases and mosquito and vector biology and control; and WHEREAS, this event will increase public awareness ofthe serious health threat West Nile Virus and other diseases pose and the activities of control agencies working to minimize the threat. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council hereby desigrtates the week of May 3, through May 9, 2004, as "Mosquito & Vector Control and West Nile Virus Awareness Week" in the City of Redding.
