HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso. 78-030 - Supporting the Continuation of Skiing on Mount Shasta RESOLUTION NO. ?f 3(J A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING SUPPORTING THE CONTINUATION OF SKIING ON MOUNT SHASTA. WHEREAS, snow skiing, both alpine and cross-country, is a healthy activity enjoyed by people of all ages , providing excel- lent youth development programs as well as being a true family activity, and WHEREAS, snow skiing has been a very popular activity among winter recreation programs offered to the citizens of Redding, the City of Redding Recreation Department having taught 2500 citizens , 10 to 60 years of age, in its Learn to Ski program, and WHEREAS, in addition to being an excellent outdoor leisure- time activity for citizens of all ages, skiing has a significant beneficial economic impact on Shasta and Siskiyou Counties, in that it creates business for restaurants, motels, and stores, thus increasing sales and employment in these areas , and WHEREAS, Mount Shasta is generally considered the prime ski area in Northern California, capable of providing excellent recreational skiing to the north state , including all of the northern counties , and to Southern Oregon, and WHEREAS, Ski Shasta Corporation operates a skiing facility above the timberline of Mount Shasta which needs to be moved due to extreme adverse weather conditions, which have destroyed equipment in its present location, made skiing unpleasant, and threaten to cause closure of the operation, and WHEREAS, Ski Shasta Corporation proposes to construct a new ski facility, a portion of which would be located in Sections 25 and 30 , Township 41 North, Range 3 West , Mount Diablo Base and Meridian, and WHEREAS , a 1976 study by U. S. Forest Service personnel recommends the same site, and WHEREAS, this relocation would provide better quality skiing for a greater number of skiers (including both downhill and -I- li 0 • cross-country skiing) , would result in fewer road maintenance costs for the County of Siskiyou, and would provide substantial economic benefits to Siskiyou and Shasta Counties , and WHEREAS, the U. S . Forest Service now has under considera- tion a proposed wilderness area on the slopes of Mount Shasta , which includes a portion of Section 30 , and which, if adopted, would prevent the proposed relocation , NOW, THEREFORE , BE IT RESOLVED by the City Council of the City of Redding that the U. S . Forest Service is hereby urged to remove Section 30 , Township 41 North, Range 3 West, M.D.B . & M. , from the boundaries of the proposed wilderness area , and is requested to assist in the development of a quality skiing facility in that area which will properly serve the recreational needs of the many skiers in Northern California . BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Clerk is directed to send copies of this Resolution to Chief of the U. S . Forest Service John McQuire, Senators Alan Cranston and S . I . Hayakawa , Congressman Harold T. "Bizz" Johnson , State Senator Ray Johnson , Assemblyman Stan Statham, Ski Shasta Corporation , and the Siskiyou County Board of Supervisors . I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was intro- duced and read at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 6th day of March , 1978 , and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following vote: AYES : COUNCILMEN: Anderson, Demsher, Gard, Pugh, and Fulton NOES : COUNCILMEN: None ABSENT: COUNCILMEN : None % '' , / LEE D.
