A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING OPPOSING DISSOLUTION OF THE LEGAL SERVICES CORPORATION. WHEREAS, the President of the .United States has recom- mended that funds for the Legal Services Corporation be eliminated from the fiscal year 1982 budget and that the Legal Services Cor- poration be dissolved, and WHEREAS, the Legal Services Corporation plays an impor- tant part in securing fundamental legal rights to those least able to.obtain effective representation for themselves, and WHEREAS, the commitment of financial support to Legal Services Corporation is a significant expression of a national policy and commitment to equal justice under law, and WHEREAS, the need for civil legal services for the poor cannot be met through state and local funding, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED as follows: a 1. The City Council of -the City of Redding opposes abolishment of the Legal Services Corporation and withdrawal of Federal funding. 2. The City Council supports*reauthori`zation of the Legal Services Corporation with full funding for fiscal year 1982. 3. The City Council opposes any amendments to the Legal Services Corporation Act which impair the ability of legal ser- vices attorneys to pursue on behalf of all those who would other- wise face an economic barrier to adequate legal counsel the same full range of legal remedies that an attorney in private practice would be able to seek on behalf of more affluent clients. -1- 4. The City Clerk is directed to send copies of this Resolution to United States Senators Alan Cranston and S. I. Hayakawa and to Congressman Eugene Chappie. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 3rd day of August , 1981, and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following vote: AYES: COUNCILMEN: Demsher, Fulton, Gard, and Pugh NOES: COUNCILMEN: None ABSENT: COUNCILMEN: Kirkpatrick ATTEST: ETHEL A.
