HomeMy WebLinkAbout _ 9.1(b)--Consider Accepting the Report on Expected Increase in Costs of Elections CITY OF REDDING REPORT TO THE CITY COUNCIL Recommendation Accept the report regarding the expected increase to the cost of municipal elections; and consider appointing one or two Council Members to craft a letter to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors regarding the increased costs. Fiscal Impact There is no fiscal impact associated with writing a letter to the Shasta County (County) Board of Supervisors. Alternative Action City Council (Council) could choose to forego the recommended action and/or provide alternative direction. Background/Analysis The County is endeavoring to develop a new voting process using a “hand-count” rather than a machine tally. While the process is yet to be fully developed, it is clear there will be an increase in costs associated with this process. By way of example, the City of Redding’s cost for the November 2022 election was $46,630.38. The County Elections Office has estimated this same election, using a “hand count” process, would cost $176,645. This estimate does not include overhead costs pursuant to Government Code 51350 nor does it include costs associated with a larger facility, recruitment, cameras, tables, supplies, security, set up and tear down for each election, and any other unforeseen cost. Due to this increased cost, the Council may wish to send a letter to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors indicating its concerns.
