April 16 through 22, 2023, is Volunteer Appreciation Week in the City of Redding.

There is no fiscal impact to accepting the report.
Alternative Action
The City Council could choose to not approve the report and provide staff with alternative
direction.
Background/Analysis
The City of Redding (City) Volunteer Program began in 1988 in the Police Department and has
expanded to serve all departments. This program assists City departments in identifying and
creating meaningful volunteer opportunities for citizens to enhance their understanding of the
local government and to assist departments in their operations to broaden and enhance services
and programs provided by the City.
For the calendar year 2022, the City’s Volunteer Program contributed over 31,124 hours of
service to the City by volunteers. While it is difficult to determine an economic value on the time
our volunteers have donated to the City, using the national estimated value of volunteer time
provided by Independent Sector ($29.95 per hour), the value is over $932,000.

Re: 4.15(b)--Volunteer Program Report for 2022 Page 2
Our volunteers have contributed their time and efforts to areas including our parks, library,
student and adult tutoring, recreational programs, events, Police and Fire – especially the
Redding Police & Fire Chaplain Program, and other City departments. Partnerships in
volunteering have included organizations such as Shasta Public Libraries, California
Conservation Corp., Smart Business Resource Center, and Shasta College.
National Volunteer Week is observed April 16 through 22, 2023. Each year, strong communities
like ours, take time to recognize and thank volunteers who lend their time, talent , and voices to
make a difference in their communities. By acknowledging April 16-22 as Volunteer
Appreciation Week in the City, the volunteers who have worked to make the organization and
the community better may be formally recognized for their talents and their time. We would like
to thank and show appreciation for the contributions of all our volunteers who have helped to
enhance the quality of life in our community and make the City of Redding a community of
choice.
Environmental Review
This is not a project defined under California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and no further
action is required
