RESOLUTION NO. 2004-43 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING SUPPORTING FUNDING FOR THE VETERANS CEMETERY LOCATED IN SHASTA COUNTY WHEREAS, construction of California' s first state-owned and operated Veterans Cemetery in Shasta County was slated to begin this spring and completed in December 2004, until a decision by the California Department of Veterans Affairs placed the project on hold due to the state budget crisis; and WHEREAS, while budgetary challenges are evident, it is hoped that a decision to support our veterans through leveraging significant federal dollars and state funds for development of the Veterans Cemetery will receive the priority it deserves; and WHEREAS, $7 million in Federal funding targeted for the Cemetery's construction is now in jeopardy and may be reallocated to other projects should the Cemetery be delayed should the State not fund annual maintenance costs; and WHEREAS, accepting these funds and allowing construction to go forward will bring millions of federal construction dollars into the economy of Northern California, and the State's operational costs will be minimal during project construction; and WHEREAS, the people of Shasta County and the City of Redding have demonstrated their support for veterans through monetary investment, donations of land, and infrastructure to ensure the development of a Veterans Cemetery and Veterans Home in their community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE 11' RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby urges support for state and federal funding for development of the Shasta County Veterans Cemetery.
