RESOLUTION NO. q0-56,4
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
COMMENDING ELLA MAY GERLINGER FOR HER DEDICATED SERVICE.
WHEREAS, Ella May Gerlinger has served this community well for
many years in numerous capacities , including 42 years of
involvement with the Boy Scouts of America;
AND WHEREAS, these years of service have been marked by
exemplary dedication to the best interests of the community as a
whole, and she has worked constantly for the betterment of Boy
Scouts in Redding, as well as all of Shasta, Trinity, Butte, Glenn
and Tehama Counties;
AND WHEREAS, she has earned the admiration and high regard of
those with whom she has come into contact, and the affection of her
fellow public servants, who are proud to call her "friend;"
AND WHEREAS, her many contributions to the City of Redding,
Shasta County, and State of California began early through her
involvement at Shasta High School where she served as:
President of the Art Association;
Captain of the Girls Sports Team;
President of the Circle S Association; and
School Choir Member;
AND WHEREAS, she served as the First President of the Junior
Grange when it came to the Redding area;
AND WHEREAS, she continued her service to the community after
her marriage to Frank Gerlinger in 1942 by: GI

* Serving as Cub Scout Den Mother, even though she has no
children of her own;
* Serving in numerous other positions in the Boy Scouts and
Girl Scouts ;
* Being the first woman to be President of the Mount Lassen
Area Council of the Boy Scouts of America;
* Being the first woman in the United States to be
President of an Area Council of the Boy Scouts of
America;
* Serving 29 years as sewing and cooking leader in the
Green Acres 4-H Club;
* Serving as President of the American Cancer Society;
* Serving as Co-chairman of the United Crusade;
* Providing 10 years of service to the Cerebral Palsy
Children;
* Being a Life Member of the California Scholarship
Federation;
* Being Honorary Member of the Redding Rodeo Association;
* Being appointed by then-Governor Ronald Reagan to be the
Director of the Shasta District 27 Fair; she also served
as Chairman of the Board, retiring after 20 years of
service;
AND WHEREAS, Ella May Gerlinger was the first recipient of the
Silver Fawn Award of the Boy Scouts of America in the Mt. Lassen
Area Council;
AND WHEREAS, she was presented the Blue Ribbon Award from the
State of California in appreciation for outstanding devotion to the
Fair, her community work, and her work in the Shasta County 4-H and
FFA Livestock Sales;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the
City of Redding, on behalf of all its citizens, hereby expresses
sincere appreciation and thanks to Ella May Gerlinger for her

distinguished service to the community and highly commends her for
the manner in which she has carried out her activities.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council extends Ella May
Gerlinger best wishes as she is honored at the "Good Scout"
Reception hosted by the Shasta-Trinity District Boy Scouts of
America.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced
and read at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Redding on the 4th day of December 1990 , and was duly adopted at
said meeting by the following vote:
