RESOLUTION NO. 86-174
A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE RESOURCE PLANNING ACT (RPA)
ALTERNATIVE TIMBER HARVEST PLAN FOR THE LASSEN NATIONAL
FOREST.
WHEREAS, timber harvested from the Lassen National Forest is
purchased directly and indirectly by approximately (twenty-two
(22) lumber mills and re-manufacturing plants located in the
immediate vicinity of Redding; and
WHEREAS, more than two thousand (2, 000) people are directly
employed in the logging and trucking industry, the ! sawmills,
moulding and re-manufacturing plants, and in other service and
lumber industry-supporting businesses which constitute a major
part of the economic activity in the City of Redding; and
WHEREAS, federal timber harvest tax receipts collected by
local government and schools located in Shasta County and Redding
constitute a significant amount of funds which are eventually
spent by these agencies in Redding for the purchase of goods and
services; and
WHEREAS, the good economic health and well-being of the
residents of the City of Redding will be substantially diminished
if the United States Forest Service adopts its "Preferred Ten
Year Management Plan, " which calls for the annual harvesting of
less than 171 million board feet of timber from the Lassen
National Forest; and

WHEREAS, it is estimated that at least 135 jobs will
directly be eliminated and that a significant negative impact
will result to the economy of Redding if the "Preferred Plan" is
adopted by the United States Forest Service.
NOW, THEREFORE, be it resolved that the Redding City Council
opposes the implementation of the United States Forest Service ' s
Preferred Plan" which will reduce the allowable harvest, and
further that the Redding City Council supports the "Resource
Planning Act (RPA) Alternative, " which allows for an annual
harvest of 175 million board feet of timber from the Lassen
National Forest.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was intro-
duced and read at a regular meeting of the City Council of the
City of Redding on the 21st day of July, 1986 , and was duly
adopted at said meeting by the following vote:
