HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes - City Council - 1999-01-11 9 City Council, Adjourned Regular Meeting Council Chambers 1313 California Street Redding, California January 11, 1999, 5:15 p.m. The Adjourned Regular Meeting of the Redding City Council was called to order at 5:15 p.m. by Mayor Anderson with the following Council Members present: Cibula, Kight, and McGeorge. Also present were City Manager Warren, Deputy City Manager Starman, City Attorney Wingate, Administrative Services Director Bachman, and City Clerk Strohmayer. CONTINUATION OF PROCESS TO FILL CITY COUNCIL VACANCY (A-050-060) Mayor Anderson stated that the purpose of this meeting is to begin the process of selecting a replacement on the Redding City Council to replace David A. Kehoe, who was elected to the Shasta County Board of Supervisors effective January 5, 1999. ' The appointed replacement will serve through the end of Mr. Kehoe's term which ends April 11, 2000. Mayor Anderson announced that each of the 21 applicants will be afforded five-minute presentations to include their vision for the future of the City of Redding and why they seek a position on the City Council. In deference to the Brown (Open Meeting) Act, Mayor Anderson said the entire selection process will be conducted in open session; and at the conclusion of the presentations, each Council Member will be asked to nominate two applicants who will be invited back to tomorrow's Council meeting for further interviews and consideration. The City Council heard from the following 17 applicants in the order listed by random selection: Russell Wade, Annabelle Beidleman, John Lawson, Chris Longhurst, James Chapin, Willard "Gene" Farley, Frederick Weatherill, Dennis Ward, William Frost, Kym Chandler, Michael Pohlmeyer, Beverly Wade, Ken Murray, Jeff Richart, Mary Leas Stegall, Rick Bosetti, and David Johnson. After a brief recess, Mayor Anderson complimented the applicants on the quality of their presentations. For those who are not selected, he reminded them that there is a City Council election in approximately 15 months (April 11, 2000). Council Member Cibula thanked the applicants for coming and expressed how impressed he was with the number of applicants, their energy, and excitement demonstrated. For him, it was difficult to limit the finalists to two. Council Members Kight and McGeorge echoed Council Member Cibula's remarks and expressed their appreciation for the significant amount of time the applicants devoted to this process and acknowledged the difficult decision facing Council. Council Members submitted two names on a handwritten ballot to the City Clerk who then announced the following finalists: Council Member Cibula selected Mary Leas Stegall and James Chapin Council Member Kight chose Michael Pohlmeyer and Frederick Weatherill Council Member McGeorge selected Michael Pohlmeyer and Mary Leas Stegall Mayor Anderson chose Michael Polhmeyer and Fred Weatherill 01/11/99 10 Mayor Anderson requested each Council Member offer one question to ask each of the four finalists at tomorrow's Council meeting. He explained that each candidate will be asked to answer the four same questions, and there will be an opportunity for follow-up questions. ADJOURNMENT At the hour of 6:58 p.m., Mayor Anderson declared the meeting adjourned to January 12, 1999, at 7:00 p.m., for continuation of the process to fill the Redding City Council vacancy.
