Lorenz Hotel
Redding, California
August 10, 1994 11:00 a.m.
The meeting was called to order by Mayor R. Anderson with the following
Council Members present: P. Anderson, Kehoe, McGeorge, Murray and R.
Anderson.
Also present were Interim City Manager McMurry, City Attorney Hays, Director
of Planning and Community Development Perry, Housing Supervisor Garrity, and
Housing Supervisor Meek.
In addition, Paul Pradia and Janet Browder of the Department of Housing and
Urban Development were present. The following media representatives were
also present: Record Searchlight, KQMS, and KRCR Television.
TOUR OF LORENZ HOTEL

Dale Hawkins and Annette Boston of Republic Property Management conducted a
tour of the Lorenz Hotel from the roof to the basement.
Following the tour, Mayor R. Anderson notified all those in attendance that
the meeting would be moving to the Westside Deli to permit further
discussion regarding the Department of Housing and Urban Development's (HUD)
offer for the City to acquire the Lorenz Hotel and welcomed their
attendance.
Questions raised which were to be responded to at the next meeting by staff
included:
1) Can the City sell the building to a nonprofit or for-profit party to
own and operate?
2) What is the cost of earthquake insurance?
3) Would project-based housing vouchers transfer to new owner?
4) What would happen in the event of breach of contract by the City?
5) Can an escape clause be provided in the event of an earthquake or a
State law that required that the building be retrofitted?
6) What is the estimated cost to retrofit the building?
7) In the event of change beyond repair, can the project vouchers be
transferred to new units?
8) What about completion of work in progress?
Director of Planning and Community Development Perry noted that the purpose
of the meeting was to conduct a field trip and ask representatives of HUD
questions. He indicated that no decisions were to be made at the meeting.
Vice Mayor Kehoe noted that the Record Searchlight
Reporter was concerned
about a possible Brown Act violation. The Reporter was concerned that
individuals showing up late may not be able to locate the meeting which is
still going on. It was concluded that the meeting was properly noticed and
that any concerned party had the right to attend.
ADJOURNMENT
There being no further business, at the hour of 1:00 p.m., Mayor R. Anderson
declared the meeting adjourned.
