it
j.. This suggestion was submitted by Al Druse for Tim Mort. The
suggestion was for Safety Flags-Snow Removal and written as
follows:
( 1) Flags are installed on each snow plow to give driver
lj visible contact to show limits of plow location when plow is
lowered to plowing position. Various means of installation
and materials have been tried with less than successful
results; including wooden dowels, heavy electrical wire, and
aluminum pipes. Due to the constant vibration of the plow on
the street as well as the plow releasing when hitting man-
holes, etc. , the dowels break, the wire bends and will
not straighten, and the aluminum bends or breaks.
( 2 ) The problem was solved by permanently bolting aluminum
rods onto small CB antenna springs and then bolting this unit
onto a bracket welded to the plow. With the orange fluores-
cent flagging riveted to the aluminum rod, these have not
only surpassed the 2-hour limit, but all have survived
constant plowing through the past four snow storms, and
appears to be a permanent solution in the future.
( 3 ) The monetary savings are slight compared to total expens-
es of snow removal program, but it does save the constant
hassle of drivers keeping a supply of flags in the truck and
repeatedly stopping to replace the broken ones.
