A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING
DECLARING MARCH 7 , 1991, AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY,
OTHERWISE KNOWN AS ARBOR DAY; AND MARCH 7 THROUGH 14, 1991 , AS
ARBOR WEEK.
WHEREAS, in 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska
Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the
planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of
more than one million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor day is now observed throughout the nation and
the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil
by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the
temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for
wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood
to build our homes, fuel for our fires, and. countless other wood
products and by-products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance
the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our
community; and
WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy
and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding has been recognized as a Tree
City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the tenth
consecutive year, and desires to continue its tree-planting
activities;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council of
the City of Redding hereby proclaims March 7, 1991 , as Community
Tree Planting Day, otherwise known as Arbor Day; and the
traditional days of March 7 through 14, 1991 , as Arbor Week.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all
citizens of the City of Redding to support efforts to protect our
trees and woodlands; support our City' s Urban Forestry Program; and
plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of
present and future generations.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced
and read at a regular meeting of the City Council of the City of
Redding on the 5th. day of March 1991 , and was duly
adopted at said meeting by the following vote:
