A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING HONORING
VERNON T. JOHNSON FOR HIS LIFETIME OF WORK TOWARD THE ADVANCEMENT OF
CIVIL RIGHTS IN THE REDDING COMMUNITY
WHEREAS, Vernon T. Johnson is being honored on October 29, 1993, as the recipient of
the Fourth Annual Award for Civil Rights and Social Justice; and
WHEREAS, Vernon Johnson administers the Redding-based California Council of Tribal
Governments, a consortium of 24 federally recognized tribes in Northern California and has
devoted 26 years of his life to furthering the rights of Native Americans, in addition to
supporting local minority & civil rights organizations; and
WHEREAS, Vernon Johnson has worked tirelessly since 1967, with local Native American
communities to develop legally functioning tribal governments; and
WHEREAS, Vernon Johnson has served in many capacities to improve the quality of life
to minorities and Native Americans through programs such as alcohol rehabilitation, prisoner
release rehabilitation, and has served as Executive Director of Inter-Tribal Council of
California, Tribal Administor for Susanville Rancheria, Housing Director and Tribal Planner
for the Pit River Tribal Council, and many state-wide and local organizations such as:
* California Youth Authority Northern Region Advisory Board
* Local Indians for Education
* Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center
* Native American Cultural Alliance
* Local Coordinating Committee of Shasta County
* Shasta County Sheriff's Minority Advisory Board; and
WHEREAS, Vernon Johnson is working to help Native American children, and has purchased
53 acres of Indian Trust Land in Shasta County for the development of a wilderness camp for
Native American youth.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Redding wishes to
join Citizens Against Racism in expressing appreciation for the efforts of Vernon Johnson to
advance civil rights, end discrimination, and serve the needs of our community.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular
meeting of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 19th day of October, 1993, and
was duly adopted at said meeting by the following
