HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 93-316 - Commending the Redding Rebels Softball Team on winning their first (1993) Amateur Softball Association Women's Major National Fastpitch Championship it a • RESOLUTION NO. 93- i 'I A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING COMMENDING THE REDDING REBELS SOFTBALL TEAM ON WINNING THEIR FIRST (1993) AMATEUR SOFTBALL ASSOCIATION WOMEN'S MAJOR NATIONAL FASTPITCH CHAMPIONSHIP. WHEREAS, the City of Redding wishes to give due recognition and acclamation to the achievements of the REDDING REBELS Softball Team and its Coach, ROGER DAWES; and I ,i WHEREAS, ROGER DAWES, who founded the team in 1978, has coached the REDDING REBELS in ten Amateur Softball Association National Championships; was the Head Coach for the 1990 and 1991 Olympic Sports Festivals; and trained the 1993 Swiss National Softball Team for the 1993 European Cup; and .I WHEREAS, the REDDING REBELS completed the 1993 softball season with a record of 35 wins and only 5 losses; and WHEREAS, the REDDING REBELS won the 1993 Canada Cup in White Rock, British Columbia, I defeating teams from Canada, China, Japan, Australia, and Chinese Taipei; and WHEREAS, the REDDING REBELS climaxed the season on August 20, 1993, by winning the 1993 Amateur Softball Association Women's Major Fastpitch National Championship in Stratford, Connecticut, hometown of softball's premier women's team, the Raybestos Brakettes; and I WHEREAS, during the tournament, the REDDING REBELS set a new ASA National Tournament Record by coming from behind in the losers' bracket to defeat a team from Southern California by a score of 3-2 in 28 innings; and I WHEREAS, on the final day, the REDDING REBELS beat the Raybestos Brakettes in two j straight games, by scores of 3-0 in the semi-final game and 3-2 in the final/ championship game, to win the championship of the double-elimination tournament; and WHEREAS, in order to appreciate the significance of defeating the Raybestos Brakettes, the Brakettes had won the championship title the last three years, and 23 titles out of the last 35 tournaments; and the REDDING REBELS also beat a Brakettes pitcher whose record over the past two seasons had been 25 wins and 0 losses, and whose earned-run average in that span was 0.00; and WHEREAS, winning the 1993 Title was even more meaningful because the BEDDING REBELS lost the 1992 National championship game to the Raybestos Brakettes in Redding by a score of I, 1-0 in eight innings, finishing second; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby commends the success and sportsmanship of the REDDING REBELS' players, coaches, and entire organization. They have brought fame to the Redding Area; additional tourism revenues to the City of Redding; and are an example of outstanding achievement by citizens in our Community.
