HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 93-093 - Endorsing the White Paper entitled "A vision for resource mgmt" which promotes sound natural resource mgmt programs in forest of the Northwest RESOLUTION NO. 93-93 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING ENDORSING THE WHITE PAPER ENTITLED, "A VISION FOR RESOURCE MANAGEMENT" WHICH PROMOTES SOUND NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMS IN THE FORESTS OF THE NORTHWEST WHEREAS, the forests of the Northwest are a valuable, renewable resource; and WHEREAS, a healthy forest has the vitality to perpetually provide the amenities of aesthetics, clean air, clean water, wood products, wildlife and fisheries habitat; and WHEREAS, there is a great need to maintain a healthy ecosystem that coexists with healthy economic and social systems on a national and global scale, which are socially and environmentally compatible; and I WHEREAS, the people first impacted by resource allocation decisions are residents of resource providing communities; and WHEREAS, the resource providing communities are unique cultures which are integral to the diversity of this nation; and WHEREAS, the value of passing customs from one generation to the next is an integral part of our cultural heritage; and WHEREAS, the value of those with experience and knowledge of local landscapes, historic events and historical human use are crucial to forest management options; and WHEREAS, the social and economic stability of our community is based on primary employment from the management and stewardship of natural resources; and WHEREAS, the use and enjoyment of resource values and the availability and affordability of forest products is essential to our nation; and WHEREAS, maintaining a broad-based business community, which includes all businesses, both large and small, is dependent upon a healthy economic structure; and WHEREAS, the Forest Values Task Force, which represents more than 100 grass roots organizations and hundreds of thousands of families in a five-state region covering Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho and Montana has developed "A Vision for Resource Management" to implement biologically defensible resource management for the needs of humankind today without compromising the ability of future generations to do the same. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Redding hereby endorses "A Vision for Resource Management" and urges President Clinton, the administration, members of the Northwest delegation and other participants of the Forest Summit to use it to determine future forest management options.
