HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 94-244 - Commending the Redding Rebels Softball Team on Winning the 1994 ASA Women's Major Fastpitch Softball Championship i RESOLUTION NO. 94-244 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING COMMENDING THE REDDING REBELS SOFTBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE 1994 ASA WOMEN'S MAJOR FASTPITCH SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP. WHEREAS, the City of Redding wishes to recognize the further achievements of the REDDING REBELS Softball Team and its Coach, ROGER DAWES; and WHEREAS, ROGER DAWES, who founded the team in 1978, has coached the REBELS in 11 Amateur Softball Association National Championships; he was also the Head Coach for the 1990 and 1991 Olympic Sports Festivals, and trained the 1993 Swiss National Softball Team for the 1993 European Cup; and WHEREAS, the REBELS completed the 1994 softball season with a record of 37 wins and only 5 losses; and successfully defended its Canada Cup title in White Rock, British Columbia, defeating teams from Canada, China, Japan, Australia, and Chinese Taipei; and WHEREAS, the REBELS climaxed the season by winning its second consecutive ASA Women' s Major Fastpitch Softball Championship in Decatur, Illinois, on August 20, 1994; and WHEREAS, the REBELS, having lost their second game of the tournament, came from behind in the losers ' bracket to win eight straight games; in the final game they beat the Southern California Jazz 3-0 , finishing tournament play at 9-1. They scored 69 runs, the most runs ever scored in the tournament' s history; had the highest team batting average for a national tournament ( . 363 ) ; and gave up only two earned runs. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council hereby t commends the success and sportsmanship of the REDDING REBELS' players, coaches , and entire organization. They bring continued fame and tourism revenue to the Redding Area, and are examples of outstanding achievement by citizens in our Community. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced, read, and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council on the 6th day of September, 1994, by the following vote: AYES: COUNCIL MEMBERS• P.
