HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 95-050 - Declaring 03-07-95, as Community Tree Planting Day, otherwise known as Arbor Day, & March 5 - 11, 1995 as Arbor Week RESOLUTION NO. 95- 50 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF TETE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING MARCH 7 , 1995, AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS ARBOR DAY; AND MARCH 5 THROUGH 11, 1995, AS ARBOR WEER. WHEREAS, in 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska; and WHEREAS, Arbor day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood to build our homes, fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products and by-products; and WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, and beautify our community; and WHEREAS, trees, wherever they are planted, are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and WHEREAS, the City of Redding is the recipient of the Tree City USA Award by the National Arbor Day Foundation for the 13th consecutive year, and desires to continue its tree-planting activities; and WHEREAS, the Recreation and Parks Department (Department) has been working with the California Department of Forestry, the University of California Extension, and various Shasta County Schools in a program to plant trees at local sites during Arbor week; in addition, the Department will be giving away approximately 1,000 trees to City residents on March 6 and 7 for planting on private property; and • WHEREAS, the Department, in conjunction with members of the American Society of Foresters, is also working with various Redding area school administrators and students in a program designed to provide classroom instruction and assistance in organizing and planting trees at various school locations; NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby proclaims March 7 , 1995, as Community Tree Planting Day, otherwise known as Arbor Day; and the traditional days of March 5 through 11, 1995, as Arbor Week. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens of the City of Redding to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands; support our City' s Urban Forestry Program; and plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced, read, and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council on the 21st day of February, 1995 , by the following vote: AYES: COUNCIL MEMBERS: P.
