RESOLUTION NO. 96-1
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
REDDING COMMENDING RETIRING DIRECTOR OF
RECREATION AND PARKS, THOMAS FRANK RILEY, FOR HIS
30 YEARS' SERVICE AND DEDICATION TO THE CITY OF
REDDING.
WHEREAS, on December 29, 1995, Thomas Frank Riley retired as the City's Director of
Recreation and Parks to pursue other endeavors; and
WHEREAS, during his 30-year tenure with the City of Redding Recreation and Parks
Department from 1965 through 1995, he was instrumental in:
► Adding 24 neighborhood and community parks;
► Adding a municipal swimming pool at the Enterprise High School;
► Coordinating the gymnasium project for the Parsons Junior High School;
► Coordinating the development of soccer and baseball fields with local School Districts;
► Completing Phase I of the Enterprise Community Park, and starting Phase II;
► Hosting five National Softball Tournaments;
► Coordinating the planting of thousands of trees throughout the City, and Redding being
the recipient of the Tree City USA Award from the National Arbor Day Foundation for
13 consecutive years;
► Coordinating the fireworks and festivities for the July 4th Freedom Festival
Celebrations;
► Developing numerous recreation programs that encourage citizens of all ages to
participate in snow skiing, tennis, softball, baseball, soccer, swimming, and other �
lifetime leisure activities; and
► Assisting the senior citizens organization to become a model for other senior facilities �
to emulate; and �

WHEREAS, in addition to the above, Tom was also involved with the planning of the
Sacramento River Trail, the Sacramento River Bridge, and the Kids Kingdom Project, all of which
are lasting contributions to the health, recreation, and enjoyment of the citizens of Redding;

NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of
Redding hereby extends its appreciation to Tom Riley for his valuable contributions and service to the
City of Redding and its citizens for the past 30 years.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council members wish Tom continued success as a
founding member and Festival Director of the Shasta Jazz Festival, in its llth year, and many happy
years of handball tournaments, lots of golf pars, and fly fishing trips!
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced, read, and adopted at a
regular meeting of the City Council on the 2nd day of January, 1996, by the following vote:
