RESOLUTION NO. 96-�(p
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF REDDING DECLARING MARCH 7, 1996, AS
COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING/ARBOR DAY, AND
MARCH 3-9, 1996, AS ARBOR WEEK.
WHEREAS, in 1872 J. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture
that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and
WHEREAS, Arbor Day was first observed with the planting of more than one million
trees in Nebraska; Arbor day is now observed throughout the nation and the world; and
W�IEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut
heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide
habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood to build our homes,
fuel for our fires and countless other wood products and by-products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality
of business areas, beautify our community and are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and
WHEREAS, The National Arbor Day Foundation has awarded the City of Redding with
a Tree City USA Award for the 15th consecutive year, and a Tree Line USA Utility Award
for the second consecutive year; and
WHEREAS, the City desires to continue its tree-planting activities and its educational
program about the energy conservation benefits derived from trees;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS HEREBY RESOLVED that the City Council proclaims ,,��
March 7, 1996, as Community Tree Planting/Arbor Day, and the traditional days of March 3 ,
through 9, 1996, as Arbor Week. �

BE IT FiJRTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens of the City
to protect our trees and woodlands, support the City's Urban Forestry Program and plant trees
to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced, read and adopted
at a regular meeting of the City Council on the 20th day of February, 1996, by the following
vote:
