HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 96-087 - Proclaiming the week of May 12-18, 1996, as "National Police Officers' Memorial Week," & May 15, 1996, as "Police Memoiral Day" in the COR s .� • • RESOLUTION NO. 96-� A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF MAY 12-18, 1996, AS "NATIONAL POLICE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL WEEK," AND MAY 15, 1996, AS "POLICE MEMORIAL DAY" IN THE CITY OF REDDING. WHEREAS, the week of May 12 through 18, 1996, has been designated "National Police Officers' Memorial Week," and May 15, 1996, as "Police Memorial Day" by an Act of Congress and a Presidential Proclamation; and WHEREAS, this week has been set aside to commemorate the over 13,500 law enforcement officers slain in the line of duty during the course of American history; and WHEREAS, in 1995 81 officers were killed nationwide, with 18 California officers being feloniously killed; and WHEREAS, the safety of our citizenry greatly depends on the services of the Redding Police Department, the Shasta County Sheriff's Department, and the Anderson Police Department, as well as the many state and federal agencies that make up the law enforcement community in Shasta County; and WHEREAS, the Shasta County Peace Officers Memarial ceremony will be held in front of the Shasta County Courthouse on May 15 at 12 noon; and certain requests have been made of the City Council in connection with parking and the use of certain streets restricted by the ceremony; NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby: 1. Proclaims the week of May 12 through 18, 1996, as "National Police Officers' Memorial Week," and May 15, 1996, as "PoGce Memorial Day" in the City � of Redding. � 2. Directs that all City of Redding flags be flown at half-mast on May 15 in honor 6� of the police officers killed in the line of duty during 1995. ' 3. Urges residents and civic organizations to salute this City's dedicated law � enforcement professionals by attending the Shasta County Peace Officers ,� . - � � Memorial ceremony in front of the Shasta County Courthouse May 15 at 12 noon. In connection therewith, the Chief of Police, in cooperation with the Director of Public Works, is directed to: (a) prohibit parking on the south side of Butte Street and the north side of Yuba Street, between Court and West Streets, between the hours of 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. on May 15; and (b) prohibit parking and vehicular traffic on Butte and Yuba Streets, between Court and West Streets, between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on May 15. I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced, read and adopted at a regular meeting of the City Council on the 7th day of May , 1996, by the following vote: AYES: COUNCIL MEMBERS: P• Anderson, R.
