RESOLUTION NO. 97- ��
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF REDDING DECLARING MARCH 7, 1997,
AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY, AND
MARCH 2-8, 1997, AS ARBOR WEEK.
WHEREAS, in 1872 J. Sterling Marton proposed to the Nebraska Board of Agriculture
that a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and Arbor Day was first observed with the
planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, Arbor day—celebrating 125 years in 1997—is now observed throughout the
nation and the world; and
WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut
heating and cooling costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen and provide
habitat for wildlife; and
WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource, giving us paper, wood to build our homes,
fuel for our fires, and countless other wood products and by-products; and
WHEREAS, trees in our City increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of
business areas and beautify our community; and
WHEREAS, The National Arbor Day Foundation has awarded the City of Redding,
through the Community Services Department, Parks Division, with a Tree City USA award for
1996—the 16th consecutive year—and its first Tree City USA Growth award for 1996 for its
efforts in developing and promoting tree-care programs; and
WHEREAS, the City of Redding Electric Utility has been named a Tree Line USA \
Utility for 1996—the third consecutive year—in recognition of its leadership in caring for trees, v
while meeting service objectives; and �

WHEREAS, the Community Services Department will continue the tree �
planting/maintenance programs in the community for various program benefits, including �
aesthetics, energy conservation and economics; and

WHEREAS, the Electric Utility will strive to promote the positive co-existence of trees
and utility lines, and the energy-conservation benefits to be derived from trees, through
communication, education and training;
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the City Council proclaims March 7,
1997, as Community Tree Planting Day, and the traditional days of March 2 through 8, 1997, as
Arbor Week.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens of the City
to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands; support the City's Urban Forestry Program;
and plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced, read and adopted at
a regular meeting of the City Council on the lsth day of February, 1997, by the following vote:
