A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING PROCLAIM�NG
OCTOBER 23 THROUGH 31, 1997, AS "RED RIBBON WEEK"
WHEREAS, the purpose of the Red Ribbon Week Campaign is to present a unified and visible
commitment toward the creation of a drug-free America, and signify an attitude of intolerance to the use
of illegal drugs and the illegal use of legal drugs; and
WHEREAS, the National Red Ribbon Campaign will be celebrated October 23 through October
31, 1997, in California and throughout the country with the Red Ribbon symbolizing commitment to a drug-
free, healthy lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, the 1997 theme ofthe Red Ribbon Campaign in Shasta County is "Proud To Be Drug
Free" and thousands will demonstrate their commitment to a drug-free life style by wearing and displaying
red ribbons during this week-long campaign; and
WHEREAS, the challenge to California communities and schools to give our youth the chance to
be free of alcohol, tobacco and other illegal drugs has never been greater; and
WNEREAS, in conjunction with Red Ribbon Week, the Shasta County Chemical People, the
Shasta County Alcohol& Drug Programs, the Youth Violence Prevention Council, the Rotary Foundation
Against Substance Abuse, and the Redding Record Searchlight have joined to sponsor a Youth to Youth
Conference for High School Students on October 1 l and l2, 1997; and
WHEREAS, recent reports indicate that drug use by teenagers has significantly increased during
the past few years and is beginning at an earlier age; and
WHEREAS, the entire community - homes, schools, churches, businesses, the Redding Police
Department's Crime Prevention Unit, and governmental agencies - are uniting to organize and support
healthy, drug-free youth and their drug-free activities.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of the City of Redding hereby �
declares October 23 through October 31, 1997, as "RED RIBBON WEEK," in Redding, California, and �
encourages citizens to participate in drug prevention activities making a visible statement that we are firmly �
committed to a drug-free and alcohol abuse-free community. \

I HEREI3Y CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting
of the City Council of the City of Redding on the 7th day of October, 1997, and was duly adopted at said
meeting by the following vote:
