HomeMy WebLinkAboutReso 98-017 - Declaring 03-06-98, as Community Tree Planting Day, otherwise known as Arbor Day; & March 7 through 14, 1998, Arbor Week � � � � s • � RESOLUTION N0.98- 1 7 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNC[L OF THE CITY OF REDDINC DECLARINC MARCH 6, 1998, AS COMMUNITY TREE PLANTING DAY, OTHERWISE KNOWN AS ARBOR DAY; AIYD MARCH 7 THROUGH 14, 1998, AS ARBOR WEEK. WHEREAS, in 1872 ,I. Sterling Morton proposed to the Nebraska Board of�Agriculture tllat a special day be set aside for the planting of trees; and WHEREAS,Arbor Day was tirst observed with the planting of more than one million trees in Nebraska; and WHEREAS, Arbor Day is now observed throughout the nation and the worid; and WHEREAS, trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil by wind and water, cut heating and coo(ing costs, moderate the temperature, clean the air, produce oxy�en, and provide habitat for wildlil'e; and WHEREAS, trees are a renewable resource,giving us paper,wood to build our homes, fuel for our tires, and countless other wood products and by-products; and WHEREAS, trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality ofi business areas, and beautifiy our community; and WHEREAS, trees wherever they are planted;are a source of joy and spiritual renewal; and WHEREAS, the City of Reddin� has been recognized as a Tree City USA by the National Arbor Day Foundation tor the sixteenth consecutive year, and desires to continue its tree-planting activities; and � � �(,'' t � „ ' � � �, WHEREAS, the City of Redding has also been recognized as a"t'ree Line tltility USA by the National Arbor Day Fo�u�dation for the Fourth consecutive year, and desires to continue its ed�icationai program about the energy conservation benefits derived from trees; NOW, THERF.FORF,, IT lS HEREBY RF,SOLVED that the City Council of the City ot�Reddi��g hereby proclaims March 6, 1998, as Community Tree Planting Day, otherwise knc�wn as nrbor Day; and the traditional days of March 7 throu�h 14, 1998, as Arbor Week. I3E 1"T FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council encourages all citizens residing within the city limits of the city of Redding to support efforts to protect our trees and woodlands; support our City's Urban Forestry Program; and plant trees to gladden the hearts and promote the well-being of present and future generations.
