RESOLUTION NO. 98-,
A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL PROCLAINIING
MAY 17-23, 1998, AS "PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" IN THE
CITY OF REDDING.
WHEREAS:
A. In the early 1960's, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed 1lational Public Works Week
as an annual reminder of the many ways public works agencies contribute to our quality of life.
B. This year, Congress and the American Public Works Association have declared
May 17-23, 1998, as National Public Works Week. The theme far this year's event is "Celebrating the
People of Public Works: Leaving an imprint on the world is one of life's endearing quests: For the
men and women of public works, it is a daily triumph." '
C. The public works services and programs provided in our community, such as water,
sewer, streets, highways and bridges, are an integral part of our citizens' everyday lives, and add to the
health, safety and comfort of this community. The support of an understanding and informed citizenry
is vital to the efficient operation of these systems and programs.
D. The planning, design, construction and effectiveness of these facilities is vitally
dependent upon the efforts and skills of public works officials. In addition, the efficiency of the
qualified and dedicated personnel who staff public works departments is materially influenced by the
People's attitudes and understanding of the importance of the work performed by staff.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the week of May 17-23, 1998, be designated
"PUBLIC WORKS WEEK" in the City of Redding. All citizens and civic organizations are
encouraged to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing public works, and to recognize
the contributions that public works officials and personnel make every day in building and maintaining
the City's valuable public infrastructure.
