A RESOLUTION OF THE CiTY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDI)ING DECLARING
THE MONTH OCTOBER 1998, AS "BREAST CANCER AWAg2ENESS MONTH"
AND OCTOB:ER 22, 1998, AS "THINK PINK," BREAST CANCER AWARENESS DAY
WHEREAS, thc tragedy of breast cancer in women affects every communit_y in California and communities
throughout our nation; and
WHEREAS, nationally, breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women, with this devastaxing illness
striking one women in cight; and
WHEREAS,research shows that breast cancer mortality can be reduced by as much as 30 per cent ifwomen follow
recommended breast cancer screening guidelines for earl_y detection,treatment and cure;with mammography being the single
best method for early detcction; and
W HEREAS,the American Cancer Society is encouraging local businesses and organizations to sponsor community
education programs and increase awareness of the disease during the month of October and throughout the year; and
WHEREAS, a few of the cvents planned for the Redding community in support and promotion of this worthwhile
cause are:

�k American Canccr Society Breast Cancer Survivors Wall
�k Media Messages through Regent Broadcasting Radio stations, TCI Media Services, and Channel 7R
�k Soroptimist - Shasta Cascade Breast Cancer Symposium�a;the Doubletree Hotel - October 1, 1998
�k Channel 11 Beyond Cancer Series -Thursdays, October 9 through October 30, 1998
�k "Think Pink Day" - October 22, 1998; and
WHEREAS, the observance of`Breast Cancer Awareness Month" and "Think Pink Day" provide an exccllent
opportunity for�vomcn to become aware that they are at risk.
ivOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding proclaims the montll
October 1998 as`Breast Canccr Awareness Month"and October 22, 1998,as"Think Pinlc,"Breast Cancer Awareness Day
in Redding,and encourages community members to support this life-saving endeavor,and to wear pink on that day to increase
public awarencss of the importance of this event.
I HEREBY CERTiFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the City
Council of the City of Redding on the 1 Sth daS�of September, 1998, and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following
vote:
