HomeMy WebLinkAboutOrdinance 2135 - Amending Title 2 ft � • ORDINANCE NO. �� AN ORDINANCE OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING AMENDING TITLE 2 OF THE REDDING MUNICIPAL CODE BY ADDING CHAPTER 2.17 ENTITLED GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS. The City Council of the City of Redding does ordain as follows: Section 1. Redding Municipal Code Title 2 is amended by adding Chapter 2.17, as follows: CHAPTER 2.17 GENERAL MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS Sections: 2.17.010 General Municipal Election: Consolidation 2.17.020 Duration: Automatic Termination of this Chapter. 2.17.010 General Municipal Election: Consolidation. Beginning with the fourth Tuesday in March, 1976, the City of Redding's general municipal election shall be consolidated with and held on the same day as the statewide direct primary election. The time in which to file as a candidate for the general municipal election shall be the same as that for the statewide direct primary election. 2.17.020 Duration: Automatic Termination of this Chapter. This chapter shall remain in effect as long as state law authorizes a statewide direct primary election in March of even-numbered years. This chapter shall automatically terminate at the end of the state legislative session in 1997 if the state has not authorized a March statewide direct primary for 1998. Upon termination of the provisions of this chapter, Elections Code Section 1301(a) shall become operative, and the City of Redding's subsequent general municipal elections shall be held on the second Tuesday in April of even-numbered years. Section 2. This ordinance shall be operative upon the approval of the Board of c Supervisors of the County of Shasta. Accordingly, the City Clerk is directed to transmit a certified copy of this ordinance to the Board of Supervisors of the County of Shasta, with a request that the Board approve this ordinance. Section 3. Within thirty (30) days after this ordinance becomes operative, as provided in Section 2 hereof, the City Clerk shall cause a notice to be mailed to all registered voters in accordance with Government Code Section 36503.5(e), informing the voters of the change in the election date. Section 4. If any provision, section, paragraph, sentence, or word of this ordinance is rendered or declared invalid by any final court action in a court of competent jurisdiction, or by reason of any preemptive legislation, the remaining provisions, sections, paragraphs, sentences and words of this ordinance shall remain in full force and effect. Section 5. The City Clerk shall certify to the adoption of this ordinance and cause its publication according to law. This ordinance shall take effect 30 days after the date of its adoption and upon the approval of the Board of Supervisors of Shasta County.
