NATIONAL FOREST SERVICE FIRE RESTORATION PROCESS
(A-050-060-350)
The fires in Shasta and Trinity Counties during the summer of 1999 scorched more than 107,000
acres. A significant amount of this land is in public ownership and managed by the Forest
Service. Over the last year, local government officials have become increasing~y concerned about
the fire recovery efforts. The Shasta County Board of Supervisors and the Redding City Council
asked the Forest Service for an update on the progress of recovery of those lands in Shasta
County. The Forest Service agreed to provide information concerning the recovery at a workshop
which was cooperatively scheduled for February 22,2001. The workshop cotmllenced at 7:00
p.m. on this date with the entire Redding City Council being present along with all ofthe Shasta
County Supervisors with the exception of David Kehoe. A representative from both the
Anderson and Shasta Lake City Councils were also present. The Shasta-Trinity National Forest I
sent an extensive team representing various disciplines of forest management, as well as district
rangers and several other staffers involved with the fire recovery in Shasta County. This team
was led by Sharon Heywood, Forest Supervisor.
Following the update, Vice Mayor Pat Kight and Supervisor Irwin Fust made opening statements
voicing their concerns about the fire recovery efforts. The Forest Service staff then made
approximately a one-half hour presentation concerning their efforts at fire recovery. This
presentation was primarily made by Forest Supervisor Sharon Heywood. At the conclusion of
this presentation, local officials were provided approximately forty minutes for questions to the
staff of the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The workshop was also open to members of the
general public and approximately sixty general public attendees were at the meeting. They were
given thirty minutes for questions to the Forest Service. At the completion of the question and
answer session, local government officials and Sharon Heywood were afforded the opportunity
for closing statements.
