A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF REDDING PROCLAIMING OCTOBER 1-7, 2017,AS
PUBLIC POWER WEEK
WHEREAS:
A. The City of Redding has owned and controlled its own electric utility since 1921 and is
proud of its choice to operate a community-owned, not-for-profit electric utility.
B. The citizens of Redding have local control and ownership of the City's public power
system and have a direct say in utility operations and policies.
C. The City of Redding Electric Utility provides our homes, hospitals, businesses, schools,
social services, and local governmental agencies with reliable, efficient, and cost-effective electricity
by employing sound business practices designed to ensure the best possible service at the lowest
possible rates.
D. The City of Redding Electric Utility is a valuable community asset and contributes
substantially to the wellbeing of local citizens through energy efficiency, customer service,
environmental protection, economic development, and safety awareness.
E. The City's public power system operates without profit, allowing all benefits to flow
entirely to our community and its citizens and consumers.
F. Not-for-profit rates and citizen participation combine to ensure that the City of Redding
operates in the public's interest.
G. The City of Redding is one of 2,000 public power systems in the United States that,
through local control and ownership, ensure competitive customer service-oriented electric utility
benefits to consumers and a measure of stability at a time when the electric utility industry is
undergoing dramatic change.
H. The American Public Power Association initiated Public Power Week in 1987, and it has
proven a successful means to educate Redding's consumers and the general public about public
power's public service mission and community betterment goals.
NOW, THEREFORE, IT IS RESOLVED that the week of October 1-7, 2017, be
designated as Public Power Week in Redding to honor the City of Redding Electric Utility and its 96
years of service to the community, its local control and ownership, policy makers, and employees who
work together to provide the best possible electric service to our community.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that our community join hands with other public power
communities across the nation and celebrate the benefits of public power for our local and national
progress.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing resolution was introduced and adopted at a regular
meeting of the City Council on the 3rd day of October, 2017, by the following vote:
