A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2000,AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH" •
AND OCTOBER 19,2000, AS "THINK PINK DAY"
WHEREAS, the tragedy of breast cancer in women affects every community in California and communities
throughout our nation; and
WHEREAS,nationally,breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in women-striking one woman in eight
and is the second most commonly diagnosed illness leading to death in Shasta County and the most commonly diagnosed
cancer in women of every race/ethnic group in California; and
WHEREAS,during 1989,death rates began to decline and have decreased on average 1.8%per year,primarily due
to earlier detection through patient awareness and routine mammography screening,allowing patients greater treatment options
and improved chances for successful treatment; and
WHEREAS,three types of exams have proven to be effective in early detection; routine mammography,yearly
clinical breast exams, and monthly breast self-examination; and
WHEREAS,a high-fat diet,being overweight,being physically inactive,and drinking too much alcohol may increase
the risk of breast cancer; and
WHEREAS, the observance of"Breast Cancer Awareness Month"and "Think Pink Day" provide an excellent
opportunity for women to become aware that they are at risk.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding proclaims the month of
October 2000 as"Breast Cancer Awareness Month,"and October 19,2000,as"Think Pink Day," in Redding, and urges
all women to become aware of their risk and the methods to reduce their risk of breast cancer,and encourages all citizens to
support this life-saving endeavor,and to wear pink on that day to increase public awareness of the importance of this event.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the City
Council of the City of Redding on the 19th day of September,2000,and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following
vote:
