A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING DECLARING
THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2001, AS "BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH"
OCTOBER 18, 2001, AS "THINK PINK DAY," AND
OCTOBER 19, 2001 AS "NATIONAL MAMMOGRAPHY DAY"
WHEREAS, breast cancer affects every community in California as the most commonly diagnosed cancer in
women, and throughout our nation it is the most common form of cancer in women-striking one in eight; and
WHEREAS,during 1989,the death rate began to decline and has continued to decrease on average 1.8%per year,
primarily due to early detection through patient awareness and screening which provides treatment options and improves
chances for survival; and
WHEREAS,there are three types of breast examinations which are proven to be effective in early detection;routine
mammography,an"x-ray"recognized as the single most effective method of detecting breast changes which may be cancer
long before physical symptoms can be seen or felt;yearly clinical breast exams;and monthly breast self-examination;and
WHEREAS,an estimated 192,200 new cases of female breast cancer and 1,500 new cases of male breast cancer
will be diagnosed in 2001, wherein 40,200 women and 400 men will die of the disease; and
WHEREAS,this year the City of Redding is joined by the communities of Alturas,Anderson,Burney,Fall River
Mills,Mt. Shasta,Weaverville,Yreka and Red Bluff in support of efforts to inform everyone of the ongoing fight against
breast cancer; and
WHEREAS,local television and radio stations will be in attendance at this annual event featuring live interviews
with cancer survivors as well as the physicians who treat the disease; and
WHEREAS, the observance of "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," "Think Pink Day," and "National
Mammography Day," provide an opportunity for women to become aware that they are at risk.
NOW,THEREFORE,BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Redding proclaims the month of
October 2001 as "Breast Cancer Awareness Month," October 18, 2001 as "Think Pink Day," and October 19, 2001, as
"National Mammography Day,"in Redding,and urges all women to be aware of and reduce their risk of breast cancer,and
encourages all citizens to support this life-saving endeavor by wearing pink on that day to increase public awareness of this
important event.
I HEREBY CERTIFY that the foregoing Resolution was introduced and read at a regular meeting of the City
Council of the City of Redding on the 16th day of October, 2001, and was duly adopted at said meeting by the following
vote:
