A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF REDDING PROCLAIMING MAY 2 AND MAY 3, 2002 AS "CALIFORNIA PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAYS"; MAY 9, 2002 AS "SHASTA COUNTY PEACE OFFICERS' MEMORIAL DAY"; AND MAY 12 THROUGH MAY 18, 2002 AS "NATIONAL PEACE OFFICERS' WEEK" IN THE CITY OF REDDING. WHEREAS, May 2 and May 3, 2002 have been designated California Peace Officers' Memorial Days; and WHEREAS, the week of May 12 through May 18, 2002 has been designated "National Peace Officers' Week" by both an Act of Congress and Presidential Proclamation; and WHEREAS, in 2001, 231 officers were killed nationwide, with 11 California officers being feloniously killed; and WHEREAS, the safety of our citizenry greatly depends on the services of the Redding Police Department, the Shasta County Sheriff's Department, and the Anderson Police Department, as well as the many county, state and federal agencies that make up the law enforcement community in Shasta County; and with special recognition of the police officers and fire fighters who lost their lives on September 11, 2001; NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of Redding hereby proclaims May 2 and May 3, 2002 as "California Peace Officers' Memorial Days"; Thursday, May 9, 2002 as "Shasta County Peace Officers Memorial Day"; and May 12 through 18, 2002 as "National Police Officers' Memorial Week" in the City of Redding. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the City Council urges residents and civic organizations to salute this City's dedicated law enforcement professionals by attending O the Shasta County Peace Officers' Memorial, and directs that all City of Redding flags be flown at half-mast on Thursday, May 9, 2002 in honor of the police officers and fire fighters killed in the line of duty during 2001.
